The Scenic Route: Driving from Apache Junction to Phoenix
If you've ever lived in Arizona or visited, you know that the East Valley and Phoenix are practically joined at the hip. That being said, there are a few different routes you can take to get from Apache Junction to Phoenix, each with its own pros and cons.
The Fastest Route
If you're in a hurry to get to Phoenix, the quickest route is to take US-60 West. Total distance is only about 30 miles and the estimated drive time is around 35 minutes in optimal traffic conditions. During peak traffic hours, however, you can expect that time to be more like 45 minutes or even an hour.
The Scenic Route
For those who don't mind taking a more leisurely trip, there's always Route 88, which winds through the Superstition Mountains all the way to Apache Junction. While it's a longer route - about 40 miles - the drive time is only slightly more than the US-60 option, clocking in at around 45 minutes. This scenic route will likely take a little longer during peak traffic hours, but the views of the Sonoran Desert and the mountain landscape will more than make up for it.
The Slow Route
Lastly, there's the option of taking the "surface streets". This route may be beneficial for those who live or work in the East Valley or southeast Phoenix and are looking for the shortest commute. Take Apache Trail and drive through desert scenery and stop at an old favorite, Tortilla Flat, along the way. This route takes about an hour or more, depending on traffic, but the scenery might make it feel like a fun, relaxed road trip.
Regardless of the route you choose, be sure to check the traffic patterns on the day of your journey. Heavy traffic is not uncommon on all routes coming to or from the East Valley during rush hour. It is important to be prepared and give yourself enough time to arrive at your destination safely.
