The Northern Route
Looking for a scenic drive that will take you through some of New York's historic sites? Then take the I-190 N out of Buffalo. This route offers a stunning view of Lake Erie and takes you through Niagara Falls. From Niagara Falls, head east on the NY-18 E and then north on the NY-263 N. You'll pass through Lockport, where you can stop for a bite to eat, and then continue on to Rochester. Once you reach Rochester, take the I-90 E until you get to Utica.
This route is roughly 175 miles and takes approximately 3 hours, so it's a bit slower than the direct route. However, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy beautiful scenery and check out new places.
The Southern Route
If you're in the mood for a more scenic route, take the NY-77 S out of Buffalo. This route offers a beautiful view of Lake Ontario, and you'll have the chance to pass through several towns, including Batavia, Le Roy, and Caledonia. Once you reach Lima, take the I-390 N, which will take you to the I-90 E for another 30 minutes or so until you reach Utica.
This route covers around 200 miles and takes about 3 hours, 30 minutes. But if you're looking to explore, this drive is well worth the extra time.
