The Direct Route

This highway is well-maintained, and you're sure to get to Utica in no time. However, if you're looking to make the most of your trip, you might want to consider the different routes that can take you through some of New York's charming towns and landmarks – read on!

The Northern Route

Looking for a scenic drive that will take you through some of New York's historic sites? Then take the I-190 N out of Buffalo. This route offers a stunning view of Lake Erie and takes you through Niagara Falls. From Niagara Falls, head east on the NY-18 E and then north on the NY-263 N. You'll pass through Lockport, where you can stop for a bite to eat, and then continue on to Rochester. Once you reach Rochester, take the I-90 E until you get to Utica.

This route is roughly 175 miles and takes approximately 3 hours, so it's a bit slower than the direct route. However, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy beautiful scenery and check out new places.

The Southern Route

If you're in the mood for a more scenic route, take the NY-77 S out of Buffalo. This route offers a beautiful view of Lake Ontario, and you'll have the chance to pass through several towns, including Batavia, Le Roy, and Caledonia. Once you reach Lima, take the I-390 N, which will take you to the I-90 E for another 30 minutes or so until you reach Utica.

This route covers around 200 miles and takes about 3 hours, 30 minutes. But if you're looking to explore, this drive is well worth the extra time.

Pit Stops Along the Way

Regardless of which route you choose, there are plenty of pit stops along the way that make great rest stops and photo opps. Make sure to check out the Genesee Country Village and Museum along the Southern Route, or stop for a bite at The Buffalo News Press in Lockport when you take the Northern Route.
