Mississippi to Louisiana: A Southern Road Trip

The Scenic Route: 9 Hours and 47 Minutes

If you’re in no rush, why not take the scenic route? This drive will take you through some of the most beautiful countryside in the south, and is perfect for those who want to take their time and explore. The route will take you down Highway 72 to I-55S, then I-12E into New Orleans. In total, you’ll be driving for just under 10 hours.

Along the way, make sure to stop and enjoy the scenic views. The historic town of Natchez, Mississippi is a great place to stretch your legs and take a stroll along the Mississippi River. You should also make sure to stop at the Louisiana state capital in Baton Rouge, where there are plenty of museums and cultural events to enjoy.

The Shortest Route: 7 Hours and 30 Minutes

If you need to get to your destination quickly, then the shortest route is the way to go. This route will take you down Highway 45S and then I-55S, and you’ll be in New Orleans in just over 7.5 hours.

While there aren’t many places to stop along this route, there are still some great sights to see. Just outside of Jackson, Mississippi is the Ross Barnett Reservoir, which is a perfect spot for fishing, boating, or just enjoying the view. If you’re a history buff, then Vicksburg, Mississippi is a must-see – it was an important spot during the Civil War and is now home to several museums and historic sites.

The Kid-Friendly Route: 9 Hours and 10 Minutes

If you’ve got kids in the car, then taking a slightly longer route might be worth it to keep them entertained. This route will take you down Highway 72 to I-55S, then I-10E into New Orleans. The total driving time is just over 9 hours.

Along the way, make sure to stop at the Memphis Zoo, which is great for kids of all ages. The Audubon Zoo in New Orleans is also a must-see, with plenty of animals and interactive exhibits. If you need to let your little ones run off some steam, then check out the City Park in New Orleans – it’s home to the largest collection of mature oak trees in the world, as well as playgrounds and a children’s museum.
