Here's everything you need to know about the different routes available, the distance and travel time of each, and some suggestions for pit stops along the way.

The Shortest Route: I-89 and I-93

If you're in a hurry, the most direct route between Cambridge and Epping is via I-89 and I-93. Covering a distance of 122 miles, this route takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes, depending on traffic. You'll pass through some beautiful scenery, particularly when travelling through Franconia Notch State Park. But if you're looking for some recommendations for pit stops, we've got a few:

  • If you're a fan of craft beer, make sure to take a detour off the highway and visit the Harpoon Brewery in Windsor, VT. This favorite Vermont microbrewery offers tours and tastings, and has a great selection of beer and food.

The Scenic Route: Route 302

If you have some extra time, consider taking Route 302 east through Vermont and New Hampshire. This route covers a distance of 165 miles and takes about 3 hours and 45 minutes, depending on traffic and road conditions. It offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the region, passing through the White Mountain National Forest, the Kancamagus Highway, and the town of North Conway.   • Make a detour off Route 302 in Montpelier, VT to visit the State Capitol Building, which is open to the public for tours.
  • If you're visiting in the fall, be sure to stop at the famous Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge, which has stunning views of the changing leaf colors.
  • In North Conway, NH, take a trip on the Conway Scenic Railroad, a historic train that runs through the mountains of New Hampshire.

The Backroads Route: Route 25

For a more off-the-beaten path road trip, take Route 25 from Vermont into New Hampshire. This route covers a distance of 130 miles and takes about 3 hours and 15 minutes, depending on traffic. You'll pass through some small towns and winding roads, but if you're up for an adventure, this might be the route for you. Here are some of our favorite pit stops along Route 25:

  • If you're a cheese lover, make sure to stop at the Plymouth Cheese Factory in Plymouth, VT. This historic cheese factory has been in operation since 1890 and offers tours and tastings.
  • In Woodsville, NH, take a detour to the Haverhill-Bath Covered Bridge, which is the longest covered bridge in New Hampshire.
  • If you're looking for a unique dining experience, stop at The Common Cafe in Rumney, NH. This local favorite offers creative seasonal menus and live music.
