Road Trippin: Driving from Cangas de Onís to Potes
When people think of exploring Northern Spain, cities like Bilbao and San Sebastian come to mind. However, if you want to get your hotspots, head towards Cangas de Onís and Potes. The ancient towns are nestled in the valleys between the majestic Picos de Europa mountain range, and they are only a few kilometers apart. However, what should be a quick journey between the two can take a bit more time due to hilly, winding roads. Here are a few ways to get from Cangas de Onís to Potes and all the pitstops you can take along the way.
The Fast Route: A-8 and N-621
Cangas de Onís to Potes is a 27-kilometer journey that should take you approximately 35 minutes without stops. To get there, take the N-625 out of Cangas de Onís. There will be a roundabout with the A-8/N-634 on the left side. Take a left and follow the signs to merge onto the A-8 and N-634. Keep right and follow the signs for Santander/Oviedo until you reach the exit for the N-621. Take this exit, turn left at the first intersection and continue until you reach the outskirts of Potes.
The scenic route: AS-114 and CA-185
The short distance between the two towns may be tempting to rush through, but trust us when we say that you don't want to miss the natural beauty in between. If you have the luxury of more time and prefer a scenic route, take the AS-114 towards Cabrales. The 30-kilometer stretch will take you around an hour filled with breathtaking views of the Asturian valleys. You can take a break in the picturesque towns of Benia de Onís and Avin. Continue following the signs and merge onto CA-185 where you can discover the limestone caves of El Soplao before you reach Potes.
The Mountain route: AS-114 and CA-885
If you relish the challenge of twisty roads, take the AS-114 towards Cabrales and turn onto the CA-885 after Las Arenas. The 33-kilometer stretch will take about 55 minutes due to the hilly roads and sharp turns, but the magnificent views of the Cantabrian Mountains will be well worth it. You can stop by the remote villages of Tresviso and Bejes to get a closer look at the mountain life.
