The Scenic Routes from Cardwell to Gordonvale

The Coastal Route
The coastal route is a beautiful option that will take around 2 hours and 45 minutes, covering a distance of 172 km. You'll drive along the Bruce Highway and pass through Innisfail, a vibrant small town known for its sugar cane fields and banana plantations. You'll start by heading south on the Bruce Highway, taking a turn at Tully to the Palmerston Highway towards Millaa Millaa. This route will allow you to explore the lush rainforest in the Atherton Tablelands, home to diverse wildlife and waterfalls.
Your first stop could be the Millaa Millaa Waterfall, a postcard-perfect image of North Queensland with a 18-meter waterfall falling into a pristine pool. Continuing north, you'll find Mungalli Falls, a lesser-known gem with fewer tourists and a lovely little café where you can indulge in delicious snacks and coffee. As you drive, you'll see peaceful dairy farms and rolling green hills before descending back down to the coast.
The Scenic Route
If you are not in a hurry, you can combine both routes and see the best of both worlds. The scenic route takes around 5 hours, and 290 km and will give you the opportunity to explore the diverse landscape of the region. You'll start by traveling south on the Bruce Highway and turn off at Tully to Palmerston Highway towards Millaa Millaa. Once you've seen the Tablelands highlights, you'll come back down to Innisfail, and from there, follow the coast to your final destination.
Along the way, you'll see fields of sugar cane, majestic trees, and exotic wildlife. Perhaps you'll even catch a glimpse of a cassowary, an endangered bird endemic to the region. Take advantage of the scenic route and stop by local farmer's markets or cafes, where you indulge in fresh produce and soak up the laid-back vibe.
